Volunteer of the Year

Gloria Sepulveda and Velma Iris Fleming Honored as

Volunteers of the Year 2026

The Starr County Fair has named Gloria Sepulveda and Velma Iris Fleming as its 2026 Volunteers of the Year in recognition of their years of dedicated service and commitment to supporting youth in the community. Sepulveda has been involved since 2001 as a 4-H leader and helped decorate the Fair Royalty Float for the parade each year, eventually named chairperson of the Royal Float Committee. In addition to this role, she serves as a member of the Wild Game Dinner Committee, an event which gives back significantly to the community while providing valuable support to local youth. Fleming’s involvement with the fair began in 2012, when she assisted Los Ranchitos 4-H Club with ideas for the Royal Court Float, an experience that inspired her to become more actively involved. Over the years, she has served in several leadership roles, including co-chairman of the Royal Court Float Committee, as well as co-chairman of the Wild Game Dinner. She also served as Chairman of the Signage Committee for several years. These dedicated volunteers approach their responsibilities with commitment, working diligently to ensure the success of the parade, the Wild Game Dinner, and the Fair in general.

Volunteer Group of the Year

McCoy’s Building Supply has been selected as Group Volunteer of the Year for its consistent and enthusiastic sponsorship and assistance with the Starr County Fair for many years. Manager Rudy Gonzalez says, “Our goal is to give back to the community in a way that will benefit the kids. We have enjoyed watching the Fair get bigger and better through the years.” Assistant Manager Minerva “Minnie” Martinez, who has been with McCoy’s for thirty-two years, stated, “McCoy’s” has been helping with the Fair throughout the years.” McCoy’s has donated shavings for the animals’ pens, panels for corrals, and has always been a monetary sponsor as well. “Outside Sales Rep Albert Brown has been very helpful with finding out the needs and helping organize our assistance,” stated Gonzalez. Each of them enjoys helping with the Fair and attending the Fair with their families. They feel it is an outstanding event for families. They enjoy seeing the students’ projects displayed, the student performances during the day, and the concerts and live music at night—all of which are family-friendly!
